In most jobs it's been the same:
"You want something built/modified/repaired? Report it. You want it done now? Ask Tom."
I've always given my all: As a teacher, I was graded 'Good' in four OFSTED observations across two visits, with every one of my maths and science students that took their exams passing in the ten years I taught. I added new skills to my bow year-on-year with CPD, professional memberships, new qualifications and taking on examiner and moderation roles with an exam board.
I am now using my time to study new courses and access new experiences relevant to my new career direction: working in Engineering. I've completed several free courses and am working my way through a Level 4 HNC in Engineering at City College Norwich; I'm currently working towards a distinction and have maintained 100% attendance.
Experience
Level 1 Repair Technician - Ingram Micro
2019 - Present
I currently work at Ingram Micro as a repair technician, diagnosing faults and replacing faulty components in consumer electronics. Reporting repairs, working with the team and completing work in a professional, timely and with a fix-first-time attitude is the everyday focus on the workshop floor. Communicating with stores, allocations & QA, ordering parts, working with multiple departments, and maintaining an electrostatic safe workspace are all necessary to getting the job done. Health and safety are also important factors as there are hazardous chemicals and procedures involved as well as potentially explosive components.
Recently trained and Apple certified to repair most MacBooks made since 2012.
Moderator and Examiner - AQA
2014 - Present
This is a role that comes with a great deal of responsibility. I am tasked as a moderator to look at how schools have applied the marking guidelines to their coursework to ensure consistent and fair marking across the playing field, to maintain the validity of the examination system. This calls for communication with centres, with team leaders and with principal moderators. It requires adhering to strict procedures and deadlines.
As an examiner, I apply the mark scheme to thousands of GCSE exam papers to ensure pupils receive the marks they earned on the day. Online standardisation, attention to detail and working quickly and accurately to tight deadlines is absolutely crucial to the smooth progression of the marking process, to get the right marks out the door in time to award the GCSEs.
Teacher - Catch22
2018 - 2019
My role at Catch22 was very similar to my role at Future Projects, although without the maths responsibilities. I worked with another member of Staff to deliver sports, citizenship and KS3 IT. In just the first few months I had several pupils complete enough units of their Entry Level Science qualification to build a portfolio to pass the qualification.
Teacher of Science and Maths - Future Projects
2009 - 2018
Future Education, the educational arm of Future Projects, was a school that taught a full, academic program to pupils that had been repeatedly let down by mainstream education. All the pupils had complex emotional, social and/or behavioural needs and it was our job as teachers to engage them in a program of education that would still allow them to achieve their potential. In charge of the maths and science curricula, I designed programs for GCSE, Functional Skills and Entry Level Certificates that allowed my pupils to leave at 16 with both a maths and science qualification.
Assistant Manager - Maplin
2001 - 2004
Want a gadget? Need to connect two disparate pieces of A/V technology together? Need a component but don't know which one? Maplin was once the go to place for all things digital, gadget or electronic. Over the four years I worked here I garnered a reputation for honesty, value and fulfilling customer needs. As the computer upgrade and repair technician I would specify and build machines to order for customers. As a technical salesperson I would answer customer queries and send them to other shops if I knew it was cheaper (lose one sale, gain the rest of theirs). As the assistant manager I was in charge of staff, security, loss prevention, holidays, stock control, profit-and-loss and promotional activity within the store.
